4am wake-up call. Sweltering heat & humidity. Sweating more than I thought was humanly possible. Scrambling up boulders in the pitch-black night. But was it worth it?
::::::
Well that’s a silly question. 🌄
They see me rollin’. 💁🏽‍♀️

“I went to Cuba because I was curious; because no one agrees on its strengths; because I’d read so much about it; because it is forbidden; because it’s heartbreakingly lovely; because so many people have championed it while so many others have abandoned it; because Cubans make great music and aromatic cigars; because they’ve thumbed their noses at their former patrón for more than three decades . . . because I’m an incurable romantic.” - Tom Miller [Trading with the Enemy]

NEW BLOG POST!! “Traveling to Cuba as an American: Everything You Need to Know.” 🇺🇸✈️🇨🇺 Because let’s be real — the laws are vague, the media is confusing, and there are more speculations & rumors than there is first-hand info from friends who’ve actually BEEN to Cuba.
::::::
But don’t stress! I’ve created a guide with everything you need to know about how to travel to Cuba legally as an American, without going through a tour company or a cruise ship. It’s not only doable, but it’s pretty simple (or will be once you read my guide), and it’s 100% worth it. 🙌🏼
::::::
In the guide you’ll find info on the current regulations, the visa and immigration process, and currency exchange/credit card usage in Cuba. 💵 Even if you aren’t American, check out the guide for a few recommendations & links to my favorite homestays, restaurants, and activities around Cuba. Link in my bio!

That time we got caught in a morning flash flood in Havana and had to duck into the first open building we could find. 🌧
::::::
A couple of women standing in the doorway waved us inside when they saw us drenched, hopping from awning to awning, futilely using our purses as doll-sized umbrellas. 😅 The building turned out to be an old colonial manor that now serves as a museum, showcasing a Mexican artist’s giant alebrijes (colorful Mexican folk art sculptures of mythical creatures).
::::::
Combined with the vibrant paintings filling up the walls, the lush overgrown courtyards, and that elegant Spanish architecture, stumbling into this place was quite a happy accident & a pretty great way to spend the morning after the rain sabotaged our plans.
::::::
Sometimes it’s okay for life (or the weather) to throw us off-course a little. Consider it a “forced re-routing” toward some other hidden treasure that you’d never find on your own.✨

When you’re on your way to the local salsa club to meet up with a couple of farmers who invited you dancing 💃🏽 but never make it because you’re easily distracted by fluffy animals. (👈🏼 Ahem — true story.)
::::::
Andrés and Juan Carlos if you’re reading this, real sorry about that. 😬

Love yo’self today. 💕 To be honest, the thought of traveling solo has, at times, been incredibly tough. I’ve felt lonely or discouraged or jealous of those around me who could explore the world with a partner by their side.
::::::
But I forced myself to book the flight and go anyway. As scared as I was about the impending loneliness that awaited me in some foreign country all by myself, what scared me more was letting myself stay home. So I went. ✈️
::::::
And then, I realized how much I liked it. Not just how much I liked solo travel, but how much I actually liked MYSELF. Enjoyed my company. Enjoyed what adventures I could have. Enjoyed the people I could meet. Enjoyed all that freedom to think and process and make decisions for myself and work through challenges and dream without distraction.
::::::
Traveling alone has changed me. Yes, me, the undying extrovert. 🙋🏽‍♀️ It’s reacquainted me with myself, grown my confidence in myself, reminded me that I can be more than fine — happy, even — on my own.
::::::
It’s not that I like everything about myself, not that God and I aren’t constantly working on repairing some of my brokenness or bad habits or faulty mindsets.
::::::
But loving yourself isn’t about vanity or a false perception of perfection — it’s about being able to look in the mirror and genuinely declare that you are enough; you are strong as hell; you’re a precious child of the Almighty King; and you are lovable and even like-able despite what you produce or accomplish or do or don’t do or whether you have a date on Valentine’s Day.
::::::
If you don’t have a date, I DO NOT give you permission to sit at home and feel sorry for yourself today. Take yourself on a date — bring a book and order fancy pasta and a glass of wine and be especially kind to your waiters who also don’t have dates tonight. 🍝🍷 Or open up your computer and start planning a solo trip. 💻
::::::
All those things you’ve wanted to do but have put on hold until you have a partner to join you or hold your hand or tell you he believes in you? Stop that. Go do those things. Because the only thing scarier than doing the thing alone is letting yourself never do it at all.
::::::

I’ve been hanging around the Western Hemisphere for the past couple of months, but I’ll finally be making my way back to Asia this Friday. It’s definitely bittersweet (the packing part is feeling especially “bitter” right now 😬), and sometimes I feel confused about where to call “home” these days.
::::::
But most of the time, I’m embracing having multiple “homes” all over the world — beautiful Bali being one of them. 🙌🏼
::::::
If you’re thinking of visiting Bali this year (and you should — don’t you want to see cave waterfalls like this?! 🌿), check out the article that was just published on the @packedperfectly website’s “Tips & Tricks” page about why this Indonesia island is the perfect place for an extended vacation! It’s linked in my stories for the day if you need some Bali sabbatical motivation. 😉
